1. "An OAP at 18": Introduction

I am a thirty-three year old wife and mother of two children, a daughter aged seventeen and a son aged eleven. I have suffered from Parkinson's Disease for the past fifteen years. During the first few years, I could find no-one, other than my doctor, who could tell me what to expect from this disease, and how it would affect me and my family. So I took the first few years more or less on my own.

Parkinson's Disease is generally regarded as an old person's illness. There has been an increase in the number of young or middle aged people being stricken with it. There are still very few, however, who, like me, began in their teens.

What I hope to achieve in writing about my life with this fluctuating, frustrating and uncaring disease, is to give other young sufferers an insight into what could be ahead of them. This is something which was not available when I needed it most. There are a number of ways in which help can be obtained, both mentally and physically, which I will go into later on, that can make this disease more bearable. After all, there are only two choices in life.
